It will be a fatal error for Bob Dole, the virtual Republican presidential nominee, to select a liberal-moderate, pro-choice running mate. This would alienate the strong pro-life social conservatives in the party at the very least and at worst drive Pat Buchanan or someone else to attempt an independent run for the White House. This would split the Republican vote and assure a second term for Bill Clinton.
Politically, it is expedient for the Republican Party to choose a conservative, pro-life vice-presidential nominee, but more than expedient it is the right thing to do. We are at a crossroads in our culture, and the moral slide we have taken for the past 35 years must be arrested or it could mean our downfall as a great nation.
