The Navy helped evacuate the crew of a Saudi merchant vessel that was in danger of sinking Thursday in the Gulf of Oman.
Sent to the aid of the disabled ship were the cruiser San Jacinto and an aircraft from the carrier George Washington. First on the scene was a helicopter from Antisubmarine Squadron 5.
San Jacinto crew members boarded the Saudi vessel, but within an hour it had taken on 20 feet of water. They helped the crew of the Saudi ship into lifeboats.
A salvage vessel was at the scene.
