As I arrived home late Monday, scant details of the deaths of two firefighters were just starting to be heard. I still had no idea the victims were colleagues of mine.
Since entering the Chesapeake Volunteer Fire Department nearly 10 years ago, these paid professional firefighters had taken time to teach me and other volunteers in the city how to do the dangerous job of combating fires quickly and safely.
Nobody ever thinks that the unthinkable can happen to ``one of us.'' Tuesday's newspaper numbed me when I read about the deaths. Two good men, who were heroes, have made the ultimate sacrifice for their community. My heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and my other colleagues in this most tragic moment.
