Leonard William Ballard Jr. died suddenly March 20, 1996 while traveling in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was born in Charlottesville, Va., on May 15, 1914.
Mr. Ballard graduated from the University of Virginia where he was elected to Tau Beta Phi Honor Society and was a member of the Raven Society. He worked for the General Electric Company for 40 years, retiring in 1975 as a regional vice president.
Throughout his life, Mr. Ballard was actively involved in many community activities. In Smithfield, Mr. Ballard was a member and past senior warden of Christ Episcopal Church. His activities included the American Red Cross, the Rotary Club, and the Smithfield Library. He served for many years as a trustee and treasurer of historic St. Luke's Restoration Inc.
Mr. Ballard is survived by his wife, Sally Radovsky Linett Ballard; his two daughters and son-in-law, Mary Wrenn Ballard Oliver of Toronto, Canada, and Anne Lewis Ballard Weaver and her husband, Dr. James P. Weaver, of Durham, N.C.; stepchildren, Mark and Margaret Linett of Glendale, Calif., Robert and Edee Linett of White Plains, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and the many loving members of his extended family.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Christ Episcopal Church, Smithfield. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Macon B. Walton, vicar of Brandon Church, Burrowsville, and Christ Church, Waverly. The family will receive friends at Christ Episcopal Church Fellowship Hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Historic St. Luke's Restoration Inc., P.O. Box 947, Smithfield, Va. 23430, the University of Virginia, P.O. Box 9013, Charlottesville, Va. 22906-9013, or St. Philip's Community Soup Kitchen/Ballard Fund, 112 N. Queen St., Durham, N.C. 27701. Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield, is handling arrangements.
