Capt. Robert Raymond Clement, 70, died March 23, 1996, at his residence.
Capt. Clement, a native of Sheboygan, Wisc., retired after 30 years in the U.S. Navy. Significant assignments included: commander, Destroyer Squadron (NU)21, Naval attache to the Ethiopian Navy in Addis Aboba, Ethiopia, awards included the Bronze Star with Combat V and the Meritorious Service Medal. He attended the University of Notre Dame and was a graduate of George Washington University, Navy Post Graduate School, Naval Language School, and the U.S. Naval War College. He was a volunteer master financial counselor for Virginia Cooperative Extension Service in Virginia Beach. He was active in the Bayside Lions Club. Capt. Clement had been named a Melvin Jones Fellow, the highest award available in Lionism.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Abernathy Clement; two daughters, Catherine Loy Clement Dinga of Greensboro, N.C., Celeste Clement Gunter of Chesterfield, Va.; his mother, Marie Herr Clement of Sheboygan; two sisters, Mrs. Marcia Clement Beuchelo of Menominee Falls, Wisc., Mrs. Karen Clement Wanke of Cross Plains, Wisc.; four brothers, Donald Clement of West Bend, Wisc., Neal Clement of Colorado Springs, Colo., Glen Clement of LaSalle, Colo., Gerald Clement of Phillips Ranch, Calif.; and a granddaughter, Ann Shepard McCaffrey of Chapel Hill, N.C.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, by the Rev. Arthur Knauer and Rev. James Wallis. Burial will be in Princess Anne Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bayside Lions Club, 716 Brinson Arch, Virginia Beach, Va. 23455, or to the Virginia Beach S.P.C.A.
