The Wilroy Civic League has endorsed Leroy Bennett for councilman for the Nansemond Borough.

Bennett, who has served for more than a year as chairman of the Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority, is running against incumbent Richard R. Harris and civic leader T.C. Williams.

In announcing the endorsement, league reporter Elsie Copeland praised Bennett for fighting ``a traffic-snarling, air-polluting borrow pit'' proposed for the area now occupied by affordable housing in Cedar Lake, and for heading unsuccessful drives for sewerage.

``He knows what it's like to be in the 5-year plan for 25 years,'' she said.

Bennett was league president for 14 years and was chairman of the Industrial Development Authority.
