James Edwards Sr., 67, of the 2200 block of Peach St., died March 26, 1996, in Portsmouth General Hospital.
He was a self-employed jeweler and owner of Edwards Jewelry. Born in Bellhaven, N.C., he was a member of Third Baptist Church, Portsmouth. He was a member of Twilight Fellowship and a member of the Sunday school. He was also member of William H. Harrison Post (NU)190, American Legion, founder and organizer of the Community Soup Kitchen and a fund-raiser for Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Irene D. Edwards of Portsmouth; four daughters, Makhinghn Edwards and Tajuana Edwards, both of Portsmouth, Gwendolyn Watkins of Hinesville, Ga. and Nugene Freeman of St. Mary, Ga.; seven sons, James Edwards Jr. and Roderick Edwards, both of Portsmouth, Mahtorhee Bell and VeVe Edwards, both of Chesapeake, Bobby Edwards of Washington, D.C., Kevin Edwards of Silver Spring, Md., and Theyartis Edwards of Katonville, Md.; two step-daughters, Linda Jeminez and Pamela McCain; two stepsons, Michael McCain and Frederick McCain and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, in-laws and friends.
A funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Joe B. Fleming in Third Baptist Church, Portsmouth. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery, Portsmouth, with military honors. A viewing will be in Corprew Funeral Home at 10 a.m. today. The body will be taken to the church 10 a.m. Saturday.
