BANKING
Susan Verbeck was promoted to vice president of lending at Chartway Federal Credit Union in Virginia Beach. She will be responsible for the overall direction of Chartway's consumer lending and mortgage lending functions. Prior to this, she held the positions of operations manager and director of retail administration.
Jeffrey L. Garrenton was named vice president of retail at Chartway. He will be in charge of the retail branches and the operations division of the credit union. Prior to joining Chartway, he was employed for 22 years at NationsBank, most recently as vice president, professional and executive banking.
Also, Diane Cole was promoted to director of operations at Chartway. She will be responsible for the management of the credit union's back office operations. She joined the credit union in 1993 and was previously the Western Branch and Great Bridge branch manager.
And, Terri Hounslow was named director of retail administration at the bank. She will be responsible for the overall operation of the retail branches. She was previously branch manager at the credit union's Newtown branch.
DISTRIBUTION
Fred Schultz was promoted to general manager of Norfolk Warehouse Distribution Center Inc., Norchem Inc. and Taylor Real Estate and Duane Walker was promoted to operations manager of Norfolk Warehouse Distribution Center Inc. and Norchem Inc. Schultz was previously operations manager for the distribution center. And Walker previously held the position of warehouse manager for Norchem, a hazardous materials storages and distribution warehouse which is a sister company to the Norfolk Warehouse Distribution Center.
EDUCATION
Patricia Pierce Ramsey was named associate vice president for development at Norfolk State University. She will be responsible for management support and the coordination of grants,and will oversee selected private sector gift cultivation and solicitation.
Prior to this, she was an implementation specialist at the Virginia Historically Black Colleges and Universities Consortium for Science Education.
LAW Harry R. Purkey Jr., a Virginia Beach attorney, was appointed to the Virginia Beach Board of Zoning Appeals by the Virginia Beach Circuit Court. Purkey is the principal of Harry R. Purkey Jr. and concentrates in the areas of residential and commercial real estate, development and land use law, corporate law and condominium and property association law.
MANUFACTURING
Kent W. Ewing was named president of Leitch Inc. in Chesapeake. He joined the company in 1993 as director of government programs. He succeeds Robert A. Lehtonen, a Virginia Beach resident and co-founder of the company. Lehtonen will remain chairman of the board of directors, and president and chief executive officer of Leitch Technology Corp. in Toronto, Ontario.
TRANSPORTATION
William C. Wooldridge was named vice president-law for Norfolk Southern Corporation. He succeeds James C. Bishop Jr. who was named executive vice president - law in January. Wooldridge served as a law clerk in the law department of Norfolk and Western Railway Company in 1968. He rejoined the railway company as assistant general attorney in 1973 and rose through a succession of positions, becoming general solicitor in 1986 and general counsel-corporate in 1989.
ORGANIZATIONS
Cynthia Carr Goodman was named a certified insurance counselor for the Society of Certified Insurance Counselors, a national non-profit organization dedicated to professional insurance education. She's with Nansemond Insurance Agency in Suffolk.
UTILITIES
Jerry L. Causey was named president of Virginia Natural Gas Inc. He was previously vice president of operations for the company. He started his career with Virginia Electric and Power Company in 1969 and rose through various customer service, administrative and marketing positions. He moved to Virginia Natural Gas, then a sister company of Virginia Power, as manager of operations in 1984, a position he held until becoming vice president of operations. He succeeds William A. Fox who was named president of two Consolidated Natural Gas Co. distribution companies - The Peoples Natural Gas Co., Pittsburgh and Hope Gas Inc. in Clarksburg, W.Va. He will be based in Pittsburgh.
SHIPBUILDING
Daniel L. Arczynski was named director of strategy and business development at Newport News Shipbuilding. He'll oversee the development of the company's annual strategic plan and identify new growth opportunities. Prior to this, he was vice president, mergers and acquisitions for Shawmut National Corporation in Hartford, Conn.
