A security guard shot and critically wounded an accused shoplifter Saturday night, police said.
Tony A. Davis, 30, of the 2700 block of Colson Place, was listed in stable condition Sunday night at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He was shot in the chest.
The incident occurred just before 9 p.m. at the Be-Lo supermarket in the 4600 block of E. Princess Anne Road, police said.
Larry Hill, a police spokesman, said an altercation broke out when the guard confronted Davis.
Davis, who was shot once in the chest, fled the store. He was picked up by police and paramedics a short distance away at Ingleside Road and Princess Anne Road.
He is charged with petty larceny and simple assault.
No charges have been filed against the guard, and his name was not released. But the case is being referred to the commonwealth's attorney for review.
