All Brian Kollar wanted was a respectable showing at the Colonial Relays.
``I didn't think I had a chance at winning anything,'' he said. ``I was going to have to compete against all these state champions from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland. I just wanted to see what I could do against them.''
After gaining confidence, the First Colonial sophomore learned he was in a class of his own. Kollar set a 15-16 age-group AAU national record in the javelin and won the high school boys discuss.
``When I broke the record I was kind of shocked,'' he said. ``The record was set in 1981, and it feels good to break something that stood for 15 years.''
Since Virginia high schools don't have the javelin, Kollar had to compete in the open men's division. He finished seventh, with a throw of 193 feet, 4 inches.
He then came back and threw the discus 156-8, nearly 9 feet better than the second-place finisher.
``It was a real good performance, but he's got a lot of room for improvement,'' First Colonial coach Jim Kollar said of his son's winning toss. ``Brian wants to break the school record of 165 feet by the end of this season. In order to do that, he will have to work harder.
``But as a team, all of our discus throwers did well.''
Eric Miller finished in eight place (133-11), while teammate Andy Hucks tied Great Bridge's Tobias Nolan for ninth (133-10).
The Patriots weren't the only performers from South Hampton Roads with great showings.
Granby's Anthony King won the high jump (6-7) and took third in the triple jump (44-10 1/4). Great Bridge's Brian Hunter won the pole vault (13-6). And the Norview 4x100 relay team of Joe Jordan, Erik Hines, Larry Austin and Dwayne Potts posted a 43.67, qualifying for today's final.
In the college division, Norfolk State walked away with three gold medals. Karen Sinclair won the women's 400-meter hurdles (1:03.10). Junior Mitchell won the open men's 1,500 (3:55.48). And the Spartans' 4x200 relay team (1:24.71) ran away from the competition. by CNB
