Portsmouth Police Detectives Michael J. Coker and Herman ``Danny'' Covey have been promoted to the rank of sergeant and will be assigned to the Uniform Patrol Division.
Coker, a 14-year veteran with the department, is a 1982 graduate of Wilson High School.
He is a state-certified trainer on issues of domestic violence and a national lecturer on the subject.
Coker is on the board of the HER (Help and Emergency Response) Shelter and a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church.
He served in the Uniform Patrol Division for nine years and most recently was a school liaison officer at Norcom High School.
Covey served six years as an auxiliary officer before joining the department nine years ago.
