Thomas Tate Pitkin Sr., 72, of Palm Bay, Fla., died April 2, 1996, in Holmes Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Pitkin was born in Peking, China on June 7, 1923, and grew up in Yonkers, N.Y. He was a resident of Norfolk and Virginia Beach for more than 25 years. Mr. Pitkin was a graduate of the New York State Maritime Academy and served in World War II in the South Pacific, earning five combat commendations as a navigator and lieutenant commander. He also served in the Korean War.
Mr. Pitkin was an agent and later a district sales manager for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, Norfolk. He was a chartered life underwriter, and president of the Norfolk Chapter of Life Underwriters in 1964. He was also a trust officer with First and Merchants Bank, Virginia Beach, and in real estate sales in Palm Bay.
Mr. Pitkin served as deacon and treasurer of Lafayette Presbyterian Church, Norfolk. He was an active golfer, a former director and member of the Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club, Virginia Beach, and a member of the Port Malabar Country Club, Palm Bay.
Mr. Pitkin is survived by his wife, Gwen Pitkin of Palm Bay; a brother, Frank DeWitt Pitkin III of Lake Purdy, N.Y.; a son, Thomas Tate Pitkin Jr. of Williamsburg; a daughter, Joan Pitkin Saunders of Virginia Beach; a stepson, Donald Ray Askew of Summerduck, Va.; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held in Melbourne.
