The 12th annual Greater Hampton Roads Crime Line Telethon, with a goal of $96,000, will be televised April 13 from 8 to 11 p.m. on WVEC-TV.
Crime Line pays rewards of up to $1,000 to informants who provide tips that lead to arrests. These people do not have to reveal their names or testify in court.
The anti-crime effort claims that nearly 1,500 crimes were solved by Hampton Roads Crime Line in 1995. It reports that at least 97 percent of those arrested because of Crime Line tips are convicted.
Rewards totaling $77,275 were paid in 1995. Since 1981, when Crime Line was started, rewards have totaled $1.3 million. ILLUSTRATION: Graphic
