Rarely have there been more names on the ballot than are slated for the local elections May 7. But you can't vote if you aren't registered, and today is the last day to sign up.
The National Voter Registration Act, which in Virginia took effect March 6, made registering to vote easier than ever.
Traditional voter-registration locations like the cities registrars' offices, some libraries and public schools are still available to prospective voters. But for the first time new voters can add their names to the rolls at Department of Motor Vehicle offices and most public-service agencies like health clinics, social-service agencies and armed-forces recruiting sites.
Registering is simple. You must be a U.S. citizen, 18 years old by May 7 and a resident of Virginia. No identification is required.
Don't be left out. Local elections usually don't generate much excitement, but this one will. We urge everyone 18 and older who isn't already registered to do so today. Then do one more thing: Mark your calendars for May 7 and remember to vote. As a resident in a democracy, it's your responsibility. by CNB
