A 20-year-old Portsmouth man and two teenagers were arrested Tuesday after a stolen car they allegedly were driving broke down inside the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, the state police reported.
They were spotted walking north out of the tube about 3:35 a.m. when tunnel workers signaled them over to a traffic control booth. Unaware the car was stolen, the employees told the three to wait on the north island until the car could be towed.
Police were called when the steering column of the 1984 Oldsmobile was found cracked and punched with a screwdriver, so that the engine would start without a key. The screwdriver was found in the car, police said.
The boys, 14 and 15, and the 20-year-old, identified as Troy D. Drew of the 1900 block of Nashville Ave. in Portsmouth, were arrested by a trooper as they waited for the car. The boys were not identified because of their ages.
All three suspects were charged with grand larceny. by CNB
