``Well, it kind of means you're the upper crust of art students in the Hampton Roads area,'' said Benjamin Brown, a senior at Nandua High School on Virginia's Eastern Shore. ``I think that counts for something.''
``It's nice to be recognized. To be noticed. To be picked out of the crowd,'' said Anne Costa, a senior at Maury High School in Norfolk.
Brown and Costa are among 29 honorees whose art goes on view tonight at a private reception at Crestar Bank Gallery in downtown Norfolk. The show opens to the public on Monday.
On Sunday, the other half of Student Gallery - a regional high school art competition in its 24th year - opens at The Chrysler Museum of Art. Art by the 60 finalists will be unveiled at the Norfolk museum, and $2,650 in cash prizes will be awarded.
The judge this year is Thomas Sokolowski, director of the Grey Art Gallery at New York University. Sokolowski is a former European curator of The Chrysler Museum.
Staff writer Teresa Annas and Teenology correspondent Luis Paredes spoke with five Student Gallery artists about their life and their art - and how the two sometimes intersect. ILLUSTRATION: Color photo by Motoya Nakamura\The Virginian Pilot< Student
