BEST BRUINS HONORED AT W. BRANCH

Western Branch High School announced its winter sports awards winners.

Topping the list are boys basketball most valuable player Josh Brinkley, girls basketball most valuable player Brandi Woodard and most valuable wrestler Sean Sanderlin.

Brinkley, a senior, averaged 11.3 points for the Bruins and Woodard, a 5-foot-11 senior, averaged 11.4 points and led Western Branch to its first Eastern Region playoff. Sanderlin, also a senior, was the Group AAA state runner-up in the 152-pound class.

The following also won awards in their respective sports:

BOYS BASKETBALL: Jamaal Jones was the most improved. Nathan Chappel took honors as the best defensive player and Kris Archer won the sportsmanship award.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Millette Green was honored as the most outstanding and Jaci Morris won the Pride Award.

WRESTLING: Matt Viola was named the most outstanding wrestler. Richard Slocumb had the most takedowns and Matt Peppers earned the leadership award.

BOYS INDOOR TRACK: Earning most outstanding honors was Clayton Porter. Wilton Taylor was named most improved and Kenny Moseley won the leadership award.

GIRLS INDOOR TRACK: Jennifer Westfall was named the most outstanding and Laurie Hulsey was most improved.

GYMNASTICS: The most valuable gymnast was Katy Smith. Erin Chinn was named the most dedicated and Leanne Luster took honors as the most improved gymnast.

CHEERING: Erin McClure was named the most outstanding cheerleader, Jodie Pearson, the most dedicated and Tanya Benton, the most spirited. ILLUSTRATION: Josh Brinkley
