Silas Martin Whedbee, 94, a lifelong resident of Hertford, died Wednesday evening, April 10, 1996.
He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and also attended The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. Mr. Whedbee practiced law in Hertford for many years. During this time, he served as attorney for Perquimans County and served as mayor of Hertford in the late 1930s. He was also very active in the Hertford Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.
His parents were the late Charles and Mabel Martin Whedbee. Survivors include his wife, Lucy Taylor Whedbee; son, Charles Martin Whedbee of Washington, D.C.; daughter, Mabel Martin W. Sisco of New Orleans, La.; sister, Mrs. Jocelyn Applewhite of Norfolk; and three grandchildren, Lesley, Charles and India Whedbee.
A graveside service will be conducted Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Holy Trinity Episcopal Church Cemetery by the Rev. Bill Hoffman. Memorial donations may be made to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church or the Perquimans County Rescue Squad. Swindell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
