James L. Pettit, 90, died April 13, 1996, in Virginia Beach.
He was a Senior Chief for the U.S. Navy when he retired in 1949 after 25 years. He had several careers, two of which were owner of Jims Galley and manager of Norfolk Service Mans Club. He was a native of Spartanburg, S.C., and the widower of Margaret M. Pettit. He was a member of the American Legion Post 327, Fleet Reserve Association Branch (NU)60, Arcadia Masonic Lodge (NU)674 A.F. & A.M., High Point, N.C.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Phyliss C. and David Haar of Virginia Beach; and a grandson, Alex Haar of Virginia Beach.
A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday by the Rev. Terry Beck in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel. Burial is at a later date. A Fleet Reserve service will be held at the funeral home the day of the service. The family will receive friends at the daughter's residence. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad.
