ROBERT A. GWALTNEY

Robert Allen Gwaltney, 69, of Freeman Mill Road, died April 12, 1996, at his home.

A native of Isle of Wight County, he was the son of the late Jessie Henry and Bettie Nelms Gwaltney. Mr. Gwaltney had retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service. He was a World War II Army Air Force veteran. Mr. Gwaltney was a member of Holy Neck United Church of Christ, the Men's Bible Class and past chairman of the Board of Deacons. He was vice-president of Nansemond County Farm Bureau, a member of American Legion Post 57, and a member and past president of Whaleyville Ruritan Club.

Survivors include his wife, Foy Carter Gwaltney; daughter, Sharon Christiansen of Pittsburg, Pa.; sons, twins Robert H. Gwaltney of Vienna, Va., and Richard A. Gwaltney of Suffolk, and Timothy Gwaltney of Suffolk; two sisters, Eloise G. Shaw of Norfolk and Dorothy G. Beale of Courtland; six grandchildren, Kara Christiansen of Pennsylvania, Jason Gwaltney of Vienna, Wesley Gwaltney, Matthew Gwaltney, Esther and Elizabeth Gwaltney, all of Suffolk.

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. in Holy Neck United Church of Christ by the Rev. E. Cecil Smith and the Rev. William A. Grissom with burial in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the R.W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.
