JAMES C. SMITH

Dr. James Conway Smith, 77, died Friday, April 12, 1996, in his residence.

He was a native of Harborton, but lived in Onancock most of his life. He was the husband of Janice Watson Smith. He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas Ezekiel Smith and Neta Conway Smith. Mr. Smith worked as a dentist until his retirement. He was a member of Market Street United Methodist Church and served with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in World War II, where he was a first lieutenant. He also served at Pearl Harbor and in the North African and Italian Campaigns. He was an Onancock High School basketball coach for several years. He was a graduate of Lynchburg College and the Medical College of Virginia.

He is survived by two children, James C. Smith Jr. of Yorktown and Leslie Smith of Craddockville; sister, Margie Sue Twyford of Onancock; and three grandsons, Brian Richard Smith, Ezekiel Conway Smith and Greyson Sandford Smith.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. today in Fairview Lawn Cemetery, Onancock, by the Rev. Donald W. Wilson. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of Miss Nancy Custis, P.O. Box 234, Onancock, Va. 23417. Williams-Onancock Funeral Home is in charge.
