The Manteo High School track will be the site of Dare County's first Relay for Life, an all-nighter with a mission - walking for a cure for cancer. Rain or shine, teams will be on the track for 24 hours.
At 5:30 p.m. Friday, cancer survivors will assemble at the track to prepare to walk the first lap. All cancer survivors in Dare County are invited to participate.
They will then be invited to stay for a barbecue chicken picnic dinner being held in their honor.
There will be a short program prior to the relay. This will include an address by Rev. David Clift of Duck United Methodist Church, and a program of joyful songs presented by The Haven Creek Baptist Church Choir.
Then the 30 teams of at least 10 walkers each will begin their 24-hour laps around the track. One of these teams includes friends of Ashbee Sykes, the eighth-grader battling Hodgkin's disease - a cancer of the lymph system. His friends held a car wash Saturday, and raised $375 toward their qualifying $1,000 goal. Donations will continue to be accepted at the relay for all the team walkers.
Music director Doug Leal's band, Missionary Stew, will be joined by The Neurocktix and at least four other bands. by CNB
