COLLEGE SIGNING: Churchland High School's All-Southeastern District basketball player Nicole Council has signed a grant-in-aid with Maryland-Eastern Shore.
Council, the district's player of the year and the leading scorer, sparked Churchland to the regular-season title. She had a 17.7 scoring average. The 5-7 point guard also averaged 7.7 assists.
Council has qualified academically and will major in physical therapy.
AAU BASKETBALL: Portsmouth's 15-year-old team won its opening game in the Virginia Association AAU boys championship, hosted by the Boo Williams Summer League.
Portsmouth defeated Suffolk, 67-38, with Ronnie Ratliff scoring 27 points. Seith Sheperd added 17. Derek Barnes pulled down 19 rebounds and point guard Bobby Hooper contributed 11 assists.
RUNNING: The Earth Day Cross Country 10-K and 1-Mile Run will be held on Saturday at Newport News Park. The 10-K race will start at 10 a.m. and the 1-mile run will follow. For information, call 366-9622.
FOOTBALL OFFICIALS: The Southeastern Football Officials Association is seeking candidates 18 or older to become football officials. Candidates should apply before May 18 and can contact Larry Hollowell (484-0523), Hank Halverson (490-4529) or Thomas VanPatten (436-3007).
CAR CLUB: The Southeastern Virginia Mustang Club will hold a Mustang car display Saturday and Sunday at Pembroke Mall. For details, call Steve Edwards at 721-3531.
GOLF CLINIC: A golf clinic to provide proper golf techniques, body techniques and conditioning exercises will be held at Chesapeake Square Mall on Thursday, May 9 at 7 p.m.
