PATRICIA BURNS
Age: 49
Address: 4100 block of Woodlake Court (Windsor Oaks West)
Occupation: Registered Nurse
1. What would you like to accomplish during your term on the School Board?
During my term on the school board I would like to accomplish the following: (a) Regain the public's confidence and trust in their school board's credibility; (b) Make sure the children of Virginia Beach all have an equal opportunity for receiving the best education they are capable of, providing excellence in education; and (c) Keeping on track, with the new school board members working together harmoniously as a TEAM, (both elected and appointed), toward the same priorities.
I am very supportive of getting back to basics in the schools and maintaining a safe environment for the children. I also believe in an open door policy for the school board, keeping the citizens of Virginia Beach informed and updated on decisions made by the board and welcoming their input.
2. What special qualities or skills do you possess that make you the best person for this job?
I feel I am the best qualified candidate for this two-year at-large position. I have been a resident of Virginia Beach for over 25 years, of which 16 years have been dedicated to working in the Virginia Beach city schools as a volunteer, in the classrooms, library, and clinic, PTA Ways and Means, volunteer of the year at Windsor Oaks, PTA president at Independence Junior High, and fund-raisers at Princess Anne High. I also worked as a substitute and full-time school nurse.
In addition, I have a total of 27 years in the Naval Reserve, presently serving as a captain in the Navy Nurse Corps, and the commanding officer of a 60 medical personnel unit.
I have taught at Norfolk State and Tidewater Community College. The past four years I have managed several ambulatory care clinics, keeping within budget constraints, maintaining high customer satisfaction and employee morale.
I am a strong advocate for the welfare and education of all children, and committed to making a difference in our community and in our children's education and future. QUESTIONS: 1.
