Police reported Monday that a woman was struck and killed by an automobile in the 1400 block of Effingham St. Friday.

Betty L. Richardson of the 2400 block of Chestnut St. was walking when she was struck, said Amber Whittaker, spokeswoman for the Portsmouth Police Department.

Richardson was pronounced dead at the scene. No charges against the driver have been filed, Whittaker said.
