State and Newport News police stopped nearly 800 vehicles and placed 57 charges during two traffic check-points Monday, state police spokeswoman Tammy Van Dame said.
The traffic stops were conducted as part of Campaign Safe and Sober, the statewide police initiative designed to crack down on drunken driving, speeding and seat-belt violations.
Monday's first traffic stop was staged from 9 to 11 a.m. just off I-664 South at the Chestnut Avenue exit ramp. Police checked 365 vehicles and cited 38 violations.
The second was conducted during the afternoon at I-64 West at Victory Boulevard, where 415 vehicles were checked and 19 charges placed, Van Dame said.
A partial breakdown of the charges:
11 - no license.
9 - driving on a suspended license.
7 - seatbelt violations.
4 - defective equipment.
3 - reckless driving.
3 - child restraint violations.
