The research division at Norfolk's Diabetes Institutes, part of Eastern Virginia Medical School, will lay off 10 people, almost half its staff, a school spokeswoman said Wednesday.
The jobs being cut are support staff - administrative and clerical positions. No faculty members are losing their jobs. The research division currently employs about 25 people.
The cuts also son't affect staff in the divisions that care for patients and sponsor educational programs, said Sheila Edelheit, director of public affairs at EVSM.
The cuts are necessary because the Diabetes Institutes Foundation, the organization that raises funds for the Diabetes Institutes, didn't collect as much money as expected.
``They really have worked very hard to raise funds. It just has not been enough to continue the positions,'' said Edelheit.
Dr. Leon-Paul Georges, director of the Diabetes Institutes, said there is less money available than in the past from groups that traditionally funded research projects. ``It's a tough period of time.''
The jobs will be cut as of July 1. by CNB
