The Republican Party's City Committee recently announced its endorsement of Douglas N. Eames for a School Board seat.
The city's first board election and a regular City Council election will be held May 7.
Five of the School Board's nine seats are to be filled. Sixteen candidates are vying for seats, but Eames was the only one whom the committee endorsed.
James Quash Jr., chairman of Portsmouth's Republican Party, said Eames was the only candidate who asked for an endorsement.
The committee supports Eames, a 40-year-old engineering and management services consultant, because he ``truly believes in the foundation of basic skills and academic standards,'' Quash said.
