UPDATE: A SOFT CARPET OF GREEN IS LAID WHERE CONCERTGOERS CAN NESTLE

THE VIRGINIA BEACH Amphitheater has gone green.

Workers last week transformed the dusty manmade hill opposite the stage into a lush manmade lawn.

The grass will eventually provide a soft place for up to 12,500 people. The amphitheater will also have 7,500 seats under a large canopy.

Although a harsh winter set construction workers 30 days behind schedule, the concert venue is expected to open on time, May 15, for an inaugural concert by Williamsburg's Bruce Hornsby.

Judging by appearances, it seems hard to believe the amphitheater will be ready by then. Construction debris is everywhere.

Last week, workers were installing the sound system and video monitors. Other workers were painting, laying asphalt and spreading stone in a sprint to the finish. ILLUSTRATION: Color photo by DAVID B. HOLLINGSWORTH, The Virginian-Pilot
