MARY MARSHALL HOBSON

Mary Douthat Marshall Hobson, widow of Joseph Reid Anderson Hobson Jr., died Saturday night, April 27, 1996, at her home at 611 Maple Avenue in Richmond. She was 93 years old.

Mrs. Hobson was the daughter of Colonel Robert Stribling Marshall and Susan Lewis Marshall of Portsmouth and Lexington, Va. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and Sweet Briar College, class of 1924.

After college, Mrs. Hobson returned to Portsmouth and taught mathematics there until her marriage in 1926.

During World War II, in partnership with Frances Roseboro Duffey and Louise Lee, she established a business in Richmond providing soup and sandwiches to the military bases at Byrd Field and Camp Lee. The surplus was then sold to civilians at The Sandwich Bar, which became a popular place for lunch on Main Street, just below Fifth Street.

After the war, Mrs. Hobson taught on Long Island, first at the Greenvale School in Glen Cove and then at St. Mary's in Garden City. In 1957, she returned to Richmond and taught mathematics at the Collegiate School for Girls until her retirement in the late 1960s.

Mrs. Hobson was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and a former chairman of its Altar Guild. She also belonged to the Three Chopt Garden Club, the Colonial Dames, the Junior League, The Woman's Club and the Country Club of Virginia.

She is survived by two daughters, Susan Hobson McCord of New York City and Anne Hobson Freeman of Northumberland County, Va.; two sisters, Mrs. Edward Vernon Brush of Lexington and Mrs. Wayt Bell Timberlake of Staunton; six grandchildren, Dr. Mary Marshall McCord, Andrew King McCord, Anne Camm McCord, Dr. Colston Freeman Mc-Evoy, George Clemon Freeman III and Joseph Reid Anderson Freeman; and seven great-grandchildren.

Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, followed by burial in Holly-wood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Sweet Briar College or St. Paul's Church. Bennett Funeral Home, Cutshaw Avenue Chapel, is handling arrangements.
