COLORFUL BUTTERFLIES FLUTTER ALL OVER SPRING FASHIONS

Wondering what to wear to the Butterfly Soiree on the evening of May 17th? The Virginia Zoo is celebrating the opening of ``Dancing Butterflies,'' an exhibit of more than 300 hundred live, free-flying butterflies of 20 species within a 3,000 square-foot aviary. I found the butterfly motif everywhere this spring, from silk print scarves by Echo at Hecht's ($45) to black rayon acetate print jacket ($195) and skirt ($120) by Betsey Johnson at D.M. Williams. A vibrant option is the Todd Oldham butterfly shirt above ($163). Tank dress ($195) also available, and capri pant ($150). All from Cage. Rhinestone butterfly brooch glitters at $39 from Pizazz. For ticket information, call 624-9937. MADE TO SHADE

Sunglasses will make a big entrance with shapes that range from dramatic oversized ovals to sleek wrap-arounds. An essential fashion accessory, the unisex look we saw last year is being replaced with distinctly feminine styles in a myriad of colors. Ornamentation includes etchings, cutouts and metal accents. With black acetate frames high in demand, Nouvell Vogue offers a striking frame (above) with gold bead accents, $213. from Gilbert Optical. Gianfranco Ferre creates frames reminiscent of Jackie O, $138. At Selden Optique. ANOTHER OPENING

At a time when special event and occasion clothing are in high demand, store owner Carol Kaplan is ready. Her newly relocated store, Carol Kaplan Ltd. on North Birdneck is offering a elegant selection of clothing for upcoming events. To celebrate, she will have a champagne opening on May 11, from 1 to 5. Miss Virginia, Amber Medlin (right) will be present to welcome customers, wearing her winning Vera Wang gown purchased at Carol's store. For information call 491-2023. ILLUSTRATION: Color photos
