Melvin Jackson Nanney Sr., 72, of Elmhurst Lane, died May 1, 1996, in a Portsmouth hospital.
He was a native of Farmville, N.C. and was a retired firefighter at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was a member of First Friends Church, Portsmouth, and he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Nanney was predeceased by his father, John Howard Nanney; his wife, Rachel A. Nanney; a brother, Jimmy Nanney; and a sister, Annie Laura Drum.
He is survived by his mother, Nellie Williford Nanney, Greenville, N.C.; three daughters, Kaye N. Swain of Chesapeake, Teresa A. Olive of Suffolk, Martha G. Dowson of Portsmouth; two sons, Larry D. Nanney of Norfolk, Melvin J. Nanney II of Suffolk; sister, Mildred Fulghum of Wilson, N.C.; brother, Richard Nanney of Aurora, N.C.; and nine grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Frank Carter. Burial is in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and other times at 1048 St. Julian Drive, Chesapeake.
