ODU'S LARRY A CANDIDATE FOR WASHINGTON JOB SHE REPORTEDLY WILL INTERVIEW TODAY IN SEATTLE FOR THE POSITION.

Old Dominion women's basketball coach Wendy Larry is scheduled to be interviewed today for the head coaching position at the University of Washington, according to a report in Wednesday's Seattle Times.

Larry, the newspaper said, is the last of four finalists interviewing for the position vacated by Chris Gobrecht, who left to become the head coach at Florida State.

The other finalists are June Daugherty, head coach at Boise State, and Washington assistant coaches Kathy Anderson and Sunny Smallwood. Athletic director Barbara Hodges is expected to make a decision next week.

Attempts to reach Larry, who was said to be playing golf on Wednesday, were unsuccessful. Old Dominion athletic director Jim Jarrett and Lady Monarchs assistant coach Allison Greene declined to comment.

Larry is coming off her best season in nine years as head coach at her alma mater. The Lady Monarchs were ranked No. 6 nationally and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time in nine years before falling to Virginia.

Old Dominion is continuing its recruiting efforts, having signed two players last month. The Lady Monarchs have three more scholarships available.

Under Larry, the Lady Monarchs have made eight NCAA tournament appearances and have won five consecutive Colonial Athletic Association titles. She is 189-86 at ODU; overall, she is 238-117. She has been named CAA Coach of the Year three times, including the last two years.

Larry was also head coach at Virginia Wesleyan in 1978-79 and at the University of Arizona from 1985 to 1987. She was part of two ODU national championships in 1979-80 and 1984-85 as an assistant coach to Marianne Stanley.

The Huskies went 16-13 last season, which tied them for third in the PAC-10, leaving them without a bid to the NCAA tournament. Washington had advanced to the tournament three consecutive times before last season and 10 times overall, including an appearance in the Elite Eight in 1990.

Gobrecht, whose base salary was $118,000 at Washington, left the position after 11 years.

Anderson had been an assistant to Gobrecht for 16 years, and Smallwood had assisted Gobrecht for three years.

Daugherty compiled a 123-74 record in her seven years at Boise State. Before that, she was an assistant at Stanford. ILLUSTRATION: [Color Photo]
