NORVIEW'S WHITLEY HAS A FIELD DAY IN LOPSIDED TRI-MEET VICTORY

HIGH SCHOOL REPORT

James Whitley won three events, placed second in two and ran a leg on the 1,600 relay as Norview defeated Lake Taylor and Maury in an Eastern District boys track meet Wednesday.

Whitley was first in the 110-meter hurdles, the high jump and long jump, and finished second in the 300 hurdles and the triple jump as Norview amassed 119 points. Teammate Melwood Waters won the shot and discus.

Lake Taylor scored 33 points, Maury 29.

In the girls meet, Lisa Joyner won the long jump and 200 and ran a leg on the winning 1600 relay team as Maury trounced Lake Taylor and Norview.

In other boys meets:

Salem won the last two events - the 3200 run and the 1600 relay, to rally for a 69 1/2-67 1/2 victory over Green Run. James Edwards, Quez Smith, DeMario Williams and Gary Abra ran 3:37.1 to edge Green Run's relay unit by three-tenths of a second in the finale.

Kendrick Jacobs won the 100 and 200 and Kellam won the 1,600 relay to edge Tallwood.

Nick Mollenhauer was first in the pole vault and the 300 hurdles to lead Kempsville past Princess Anne and First Colonial. First Colonial's Dan Baxley scored an unusual triple - winning the 400, 800 and 1,600 - and teammate Brian Kollar placed first in both throwing events, including a 161-1 effort in the discus.

In other girls meets:

Charlette Fayton won the 200, 400, 100 hurdles and high jump as Kempsville captured a tri-meet over Princess Anne and First Colonial. Oscar Smith's Torae Artis won the 400, 800 and long jump and ran a leg on the winning 3200-relay team in leading the Tigers past Indian River, Western Branch and Wilson.

Jo Battle finished first the triple jump and both hurdles as Bayside beat Ocean Lakes.

In baseball:

Cox 12, Ocean Lakes 0: Junior righthander Jason Dubois struck out the first six batters and allowed only a fourth-inning single to James Walsh as the No. 2 Falcons romped over the No. 10 Dolphins. Dubois finished with 11 strikeouts and did not walk a batter. Eric John and Tim Lavigne both had three hits.

Oscar Smith 10, Maury 9: Chris James went 2 for 3 with three RBIs, two on a bases-loaded squeeze bunt to tie the game, as the Tigers upset the No. 4 Commodores.

First Colonial 6, Tallwood 3: Brad Tetlow, Jeff Butler, Ryan Dunbar and Dorman Minor each had two hits for the No. 1 Patriots.

Greenbrier Christian 11, Norfolk Academy 2: Nick Huneycutt hit a grand slam in the second inning for the No. 6 Gators.

In softball:

Booker T. Washington 12, Indian River 9: Raquita Washington's two-run single highlighted the No. 10 Bookers' three-run, eighth-inning rally, aided by three Indian River errors. Cherie Collins hit a grand slam in the third inning for the Braves.

Princess Anne 7, Kempsville 1: Lisa Slingerland had a double and two singles to pace the No. 2 Cavaliers.

Deep Creek 4, Wilson 3: Crystal Copeland tripled and scored on an overthrow at third base to end the game.

Nansemond River 3, York 1: Kari Harrell led off bottom of the sixth inning with a triple, then scored on a Heather Behrends triple to snap a 1-all tie. Kim Tribble drove in Behrends with an insurance run. Freshman Jennifer Shannon struck out Jamie Hogge with bases loaded and one run in in the top of the sixth to end the Falcons threat.

In boys soccer:

Ocean Lakes 2, Great Bridge 0: Chad McAdoo had a goal and an assist and keeper Mike Parrish made 12 saves as the Dolphins upended the No. 9 Wildcats.

Maury 13, Booker T. Washington 2: Hank Morton had two goals and an assist and Parker Consaul had a goal and two assists for the No. 6 Commodores.

In girls soccer:

Cox 8, Maury 1: Beth Reading scored twice in the first five minutes of the second half and also had two assists as the top-ranked Falcons handed out the No. 3 Commodores their first loss of the season.

Great Bridge 2, Oscar Smith 1: Joy Gilmore scored the winning goal three minutes into overtime to lift the No. 7 Wildcats.

Norfolk Academy 11, Cape Henry 3: Angela Hucles notched her seventh hat trick of the season, finishing with four goals for the No. 4 Bulldogs. ILLUSTRATION: MIKE HEFFNER
