I concur completely with your comments concerning the issues of fairness and economic development that persuaded the General Assembly to remove tolls on the ferry that operates between Jamestown and Scotland Wharf.
There is a footnote that might be added to your excellent commentary - namely, the effective and persistent battle waged by Del. Bill Barlow and political, civic and business leaders from Surry County to eliminate the vexing toll.
Even when told that it couldn't be done, Barlow spent three years making low-keyed but compelling arguments in behalf of ending the toll. Thanks to the extraordinary effort that he and Surry County leaders made, the impossible will become reality on July 1, 1997.
