HIT THE BEACH

THIS SEASON, some old friends are making waves again. The classic bikini, the '50s hip-hugging two-piece and the sophisticated maillot will hit the beach scene in newly inspired ways.

Colors are bright, and patterns are busy, ranging from animal motifs to fruits and flowers.

The summer also promises a show of wrap sarongs that hug the hip and bare the midriff. Full-length caftans and open-weave cover-ups offer bathers a lounge look that protects from the elements.

The quality of the design won't matter, of course, if the fit's not right. So here are some tips:

Look for comfort, not size. Select suits one size larger than your dress size.

Boost your bust. Bright colors, push-up bras and underwires will offer support and cleavage.

Spot-reduce on demand. Suits with shirring or diagonal stripes, as well as high-waisted two-piece suits, offer instant tummy tucks. Some even offer built-in spandex control panels for added shape retention.

Slim those legs. High-cut suits lengthen legs, and sassy skirting can give extra coverage.

Flirty skirts and side shirring can camouflage wide hips. Stay away from tight belts and elastic panels. Keep everything going visually upward. ILLUSTRATION: Color photos
