LARGER SHELL - LESS CRABBY?

ILLUSTRATION: Color photo by DREW C. WILSON/The Virginian-Pilot

Kim Parker, above, wishes she had two extra pair of hands this time

of year. She and her husband, Jamie, collect soft crabs from 50

shedders they tend on Colington Island. They are fast approaching

mid-May, the peak shedding season when blue crabs lose their old

shells for something a bit larger - and more stylish. A blue crab,

right, gingerly withdraws a claw from its old shell, bottom.
