Kempsville All-Tidewater basketball player Charlette Fayton announced Wednesday she will accept a full scholarship from Norfolk State.
Fayton, a 5-foot-8 guard, became the fifth local player to sign with the Spartans in two years.
``The team seemed nice and I liked the coach (James Sweat),'' said Fayton, who began entertaining the idea of attending NSU only a month ago after being accepted to Virginia Tech, UNC-Charlotte, William and Mary and Virginia Commonwealth University. ``I'll get to play basketball and run.''
Fayton, also a standout hurdler in track, plans to run track for the Spartans, too.
``They have a really good track team,'' she said. ``I'm a little nervous about that. It'll be interesting to see what I can do.''
As for basketball, Fayton should have no problem fitting into the Spartans' run-and-gun game.
``They play the way we do here at Kempsville,'' she said. ``They run and they play full-court defense.''
As a senior, Fayton averaged 13.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.0 steals per game. She was first team All-Beach District, All-Eastern Region and an honorable mention on the All-State Coaches' Team.
Fayton, who will graduate with a 3.2 grade point average, added that NSU's location played a role in her decision. ``I don't feel like I'm giving up anything,'' she said. ``My parents will be close and I want them to come and see me.''
