Here comes tent city. And there's a surprise inside every tent: Handmade jewelry for urban goddesses. Linoleum block prints of contemporary couples sipping wine at a cafe. Watercolors of Chesapeake Bay scenes for traditionalists. Hand-painted furniture for kids.
The outdoor art show season is upon us. It's a long season, too, starting this weekend with the Art Show formerly known as Ghent Art Show - that is, Art Explosure, at Town Point Park - and continuing straight through to the weekend of Oct. 19 with the Stockley Gardens Fall Arts Festival.
While much of the art world has been downsizing due to budget cuts, two of this region's outdoor shows are experiencing some pretty remarkable growth spurts.
Art Explosure, partly in celebration of its 25th anniversary, changed its name and expanded to three days (from two). With Festevents' help, the show now is the centerpiece of a full-fledged festival with music; headliner Michael Hedges performs Sunday at 2:30 and 4:30 p.m.
The oldest and largest show in the region - the Virginia Beach Boardwalk Art Show - also has undergone major expansion. The 41-year-old show is now at the core of a massive international arts festival with a rock 'n' roll theme.
What follows is a selective list of the region's larger outdoor art shows and all the basic info you'll need to enjoy your days in the sun with the al fresco artists: [Please see microfilm for complete list.] ILLUSTRATION: Color staff illustration by Janet Shaughnessy/The
