STUDENTS TAUGHT HORRORS OF DRUNKEN DRIVING

High schoolers at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy got a lesson on the horrors of drunken driving on Wednesday afternoon. The school's football field was the setting for a mock accident that involved two cars and five injured teenagers.

The Suffolk Police and Fire Departments, the Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad and the Nightingale helicopter ambulance participated in the demonstration.

Students Against Drunk Driving and Nationwide Insurance sponsored the event, which was planned to make an impression on students before the school prom.

After the ``accident'' had been cleared and the ``injured'' and ``dead'' removed, students learned the legal ramifications of drinking and driving. One driver in the mock accident was ``given'' a sobriety test and then handcuffed by police and taken away. ILLUSTRATION: Staff photos by JOHN H. SHEALLY II
