John R. Simms Jr., 71, entered into eternal rest on May 22, 1996, after a long illness.
He was born on April 18, 1925, to the late Nannie Stephenson and John R. Simms. He was a lifetime member and a trustee of Barretts Christian Church. He was a member of the Wakefield Ruritan Club, B & B Hunt Club and the Woodmen of the World.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Margaret Blythe Simms; and a daughter, Margaret Simms Hedrick, and her husband, Gary, of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Richard Thomas Simms, and his wife, Gayle, of Sedley. He will be guardian angel for four grandchildren, Christopher Thomas Simms and Sara Wood Simms of Sedley and Edward Eric Hedrick and John Nathal Hedrick of Charlotte, N.C.; five sisters, Lina Sue Simms Garner of Ivor, Josephine Simms Gwaltney of Suffolk, Rose Leray Simms Nurney of Ivor, Charlotte Cornelia Simms of Sedley and Bernice Babb Gay of Wakefield; two brothers, William J. Simms of Waverly and Charlie L. Babb of Portsmouth.
He was predeceased by a sister, Helen Babb Chesson of Franklin.
A graveside service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Jim Smith and the Rev. Mike Harrell in the Rosemont Cemetery, Sedley. The funeral service will be private for relatives of John and Margaret Simms. Wright Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
