We hear from many citizens each year who want to protect the historical, enviromental and aesthetic values of the Wiliamsburg-Yorktown-Jamestown area.
An abundance of trees, green spaces and beautiful vistas not only enhances the quality of life for those of us fortunate enough to live in Hampton Roads but also serves as a magnet to tourists, who are the lifeblood of our economy.
Although one of us is a Republican and the other is a Democrat, we agree that there are limits to what government can do to safeguard fragile assets.
To complement public efforts, might it be wise to form a group that would identify resources that could be used to purchase, lease or acquire easements on key sites which, if developed, would alter the face of the Historic Triangle?
Any such group would work with existing organizations; we don't want to reinvent the wheel. What we do want to do is see if there is a critical mass of individuals, families, businesses and nonprofit organizations that would (1) donate or swap land, (2) contribute money, (3) seek assistance from foundations and corporations and (4) work with local, state and federal governments to try to ensure that this historic area retains its unique character.
If the community is interested in this project, we would be willing to convene the first meeting. We are willing to help out in Richmond, but neither of us has the time or expertise to head any new group that might form. We hope that the leadership would emerge from the many talented corporate and individual citizens who treasure our area as much as we do but realize that the change that is inevitable must be accomplished in a way to preserve the Historic Triangle's unique qualities.
