I've been reading a lot about the overpopulation of deer and the outbreak of rabid raccoons in Virginia Beach. It angers me that people think that these creatures are the culprits. They're not! It's the city that's the culprit.
The last shreds of beautiful countryside are being overtaken by ``vinyl velles'' - new houses that this city, with its water shortage, certainly doesn't need. With so many houses for sale, why must the city allow builders to continue to tear down our once beautiful countryside?
These creatures are losing their homes to a new generation of buyers that ``must'' have a new home. Where else are these animals to go? We take their habitat and then kill them for running into ours!
Part of the beauty of Virginia Beach used to be that one could go to the mall and then take a leisurely drive through the country. I understand that this is a sign of a good economy, but it's time to draw the line!
Please, if you're planning to buy a house - by used!

March 26 Please clean up Carper
In reference to a letter from Diane Marple concerning Carper Housing (April 26 Beacon), I also drive through Carper Housing daily. I have recently called the Police Department because of my concern. The condition of the area is progressively and steadily deteriorating. More and more doors, both storm and interior, show signs of breakage or are standing completely open. Some interior doors have been standing open for well over a month. Siding is breaking off and blowing into the street; the grass is uncut; the fences are falling. It's really a disgrace!

April 30 Riggs serving us well
I recently had the pleasure of watching a meeting of the Virginia Beach School Board on television. The reason that it was a pleasure was that it was the first meeting of R.L. ``Buddy'' Riggs. It's been a long time since I've seen a member of that body stand up for the taxpayers as Mr. Riggs did. He is firmly against the Virginia Beach taxpayers paying for the attorneys for Mr. Tolentino and Mr. Jackson in their upcoming trials for malfeasance in office.
The sad part (isn't there always one?) is that Mr. Riggs has an interim appointment that will expire when the new board is sworn in.
Mr. Riggs has proven that he's what we need on the board, for at least a full term.

April 29 Police impressed visitors
We came from Indianapolis, Ind., to visit a friend the weekend of May 3, 4 and 5. But, at a moment's notice, our friend was called out to serve his community by giving a speech for his fraternity.
We stayed at his place for the weekend and had a great time.
We were very impressed by the security along the beachfront. It's a great comfort knowing that your police force will keep the community and all its visitors in a safe and clean environment.
We want to say thanks for the hospitality that we all received while visiting your great community.
