Grants totaling $15,000 have been awarded by the Portsmouth Museums and Fine Arts Commission to nine arts and humanities organizations.
The money was allocated by City Council to the commission, and Ralph Jackson headed the selection committee.
In the past, arts and humanities agencies have gone directly to the council with grant requests. The council decided to give the money to the commission with expertise to pick the recipients.
The commission established criteria, including program objectives, need and projected impact on Portsmouth's cultural environment.
These are the grants that were awarded:
Young Audiences of Virginia, $3,000
Portsmouth Community Concert Association, $3,000
Little Theater of Portsmouth, $2,425
Virginia Symphony, $2,000
Portsmouth Second Tuesday Forum, $1,000
Tidewater Winds Orchestra, $1,000
Virginia Choral Society, $1,000
