In Group AA soccer, the power is on the Peninsula - during the regular season and on the All-Bay Rivers District first team, voted on by coaches last week.
York, Poquoson and Bruton, which finished the regular season one through three in the district, garnered nine of the first team's 15 spots.
Nansemond River, which earned its first playoff appearance in the school's six years by finishing fourth, placed two players - Ryan Parrish and Jerred Fender - on the first team. They were joined by Smithfield's Matt Guthrie and Earl Gibson, Aaron Dowaliby of Lakeland and Franklin's Mark Evans.
Parrish, a forward, led the Warriors in goals (12), assists (7) and shots (63).
``He was our biggest weapon,'' Nansemond River coach Kevin Beale said of Parrish, who recorded two hat tricks this season. ``We tried to get it to him most of the time.''
Fender had 180 saves while allowing 33 goals as Nansemond River's goalkeeper.
Dowaliby led Lakeland's defense. ``He was a solid defender, always there to give support to the goalie and the other defenders,'' Cavaliers coach David Wessel said of Dowaliby, who was a second team all-Bay Rivers selection last year. ``He used angles well to back up, and is a smart player who never makes mistakes.''
Evans scored 12 goals and had eight assists for the Broncos.
Also on the first team were: Poquoson's Dan Rogers, Shawn Routten and Peter Nadolny, Bruton's Shanna Caldwell, Jermaine Burke and Leif Conradi and York's Kevin Banks, Craig Twyman and Brady Walker.
Nadolny and Walker were named co-players of the year, while York High School's Paul Sidhu earned coach of the year honors. ILLUSTRATION: Photos
