Chuck Robb again exposes his ultra-liberalism (May 10) with an impassioned defense of the 4.3-cents-per-gallon federal gas tax. Check out some of his silly logic:
The tax is so small we won't miss it, but too large for the government to give up.
The tax protects us from the clutches of evil ``foreign oil.''
Foreigners will think poorly of us if the tax is repealed.
The tax stops us from speeding and driving too far in poorly designed cars.
The tax is good for our children, our nation and our future.
Government can't solve all our problems, but the tax sure helps.
Since the tax didn't cause the recent spike in gasoline prices, it shouldn't be repealed.
We should be grateful for the low fuel prices over the past few years.
Robb lauds Clinton's intestinal fortitude (that's guts) for breaking his promise to lower taxes, and he dismisses a 16-month congressional budget-balancing effort as ``absence of meaningful action.'' I wonder why he says repeal will cost $30 billion in lost revenue. Simple arithmetic pegs the number at no more than $5 billion.
