OCEAN LAKES' SALCEDO IS TOP STUDENT TRAINER SHE EARNS $1,000 SCHOLARSHIP FOR HERSELF AND $250 FOR HER TRAINING CLASSMATES.

JEAN SALCEDO'S teammates in the Ocean Lakes High athletic training program appreciate her efforts.

Because of the senior, several of them will attend the College of William and Mary student trainer camp this summer free of charge.

Salcedo is this year's winner of the Virginia Center for Orthopaedics ninth annual student trainer scholarship.

Along with the organization's $1,000 donation to Salcedo, a check for $250 goes to the Ocean Lakes program - where athletic trainer Paul Artrip will use it to send his students to the camp.

The Ocean Lakes victory breaks a string of four-straight scholarship wins by Salem student trainers under the direction of Cindy Midkiff.

``We had nine applications this year and each year, they're getting better and better,'' said Wayne Gatewood of the center. ``The development of anatomy classes and athletic training programs in the school is really being seen now.''

Salcedo, 19, plans to attend William and Mary this fall and study either pre-med or athletic training.

And at the entry level, she already has four years of experience.

``She was with me two years at Green Run and two here,'' Artrip said. ``We're all students of the subject and I try to instill that in all the kids.

``I think she has learned that.''

Something else Salcedo has learned is that she has a stomach for medicine. The sight of blood or a broken bone doesn't make her queasy.

``Nothing's ever really turned my stomach,'' she said. ``We got to see a cadaver for the first time this year and that upset some of the people. I was fascinated. It was really neat seeing the things we had been learning in class.

``The whole program (anatomy, biology and athletic training) has really helped me decide that I wanted to do this.

``The scholarship was a surprise and I was so excited when I found out. I've applied for about 30 scholarships and I found out I got a couple others the same week I found out about this one. Every little bit helps pay for school.''

Never an athlete herself, Salcedo enjoys working with those who play sports.

``They appreciate it when you can help them,'' she said. ``And it's fun.'' ILLUSTRATION: Photo by LEE TOLLIVER
