THE FISHING IS SLOW FROM OUTER BANKS PIERS, BEACHES

Pier action along the northern beaches was slow Tuesday.

A few Spanish mackerel, speckled trout, gray trout, spot and toadfish were landed on Kitty Hawk Pier during the morning. Fishing was slow in the afternoon.

Avalon Pier reported a few Spanish mackerel and bluefish taken early in the day, but fishing was slow after that.

Lots of bluefish, some Spanish mackerel and a mixture of small bottom fish were landed throughout the morning from Nags Head Pier. A few small bottom fish were caught in the afternoon.

Small bluefish were caught all morning on Outer Banks Pier. A few Spanish mackerel, gray trout and sea mullet also were taken. Afternoon action was poor.

South of Oregon Inlet, anglers on Rodanthe Pier caught a few bluefish, some small Spanish mackerel and several flounder.

Avon Pier reported fair numbers of small bottom fish landed.

Several large fish were decked on Frisco Pier. A 17-pound king mackerel was landed by Chuck Howell of Frisco, and a 48-pound cobia by Kenny Jones of Reidsville, N.C. Spanish mackerel weighing as much as 4 1/3 pounds, bluefish and bonito also were taken.

Surf action along the northern beaches was slow. Small bottom fish, tailor blues and some gray trout were landed around Oregon Inlet.

A few bottom fish were beached by surfcasters from Rodanthe to Buxton.

Some Spanish mackerel were landed just after dawn at Cape Point. A school of drum passed by and a few were hooked by mackerel fishermen, but they were unable to bring them to the beach.

Surf fishing along the beach from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet was slow.

Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet was fair, with scattered Spanish mackerel and small bluefish taken. Spot and small gray trout were landed by headboat fishermen in the area.

Blue water fishing southeast of Oregon Inlet was fair. Only a few yellowfin tuna were landed, but most were large. Some dolphin also were landed. Most of the action was from the 40550 Loran line south. The Outer Limits released a white marlin.

The Hatteras offshore fleet caught dolphin, wahoo and a few tuna. Several billfish were released, including a blue marlin by the Sea Creature and a white marlin by the Tuna Duck.

The water temperature was 68 degrees Tuesday at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 70 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
