Lightning struck the rear of a house Monday in the 7400 block of Old Myrtle Road, starting a fire that caused heavy damage. No one was injured.
Officials said the fire apparently started in the attic. It was reported about 9:45 a.m.
Samuel Faulk, who lives in the house, saw smoke coming from the kitchen ceiling light, said Fire Department spokesman Jeff Messinger. Faulk helped his wife, Lucy, who was asleep in the bedroom, out of the house.
Firefighters quickly contained the blaze, which had spread to about half the house and filled it with heavy smoke. They remained on the scene for two hours, searching for hidden flames and helping salvage the family's belongings.
The couple is temporarily staying with relatives.
