Homeowners who want to sell their homes without a real estate agent can advertise their residential properties free on the Internet. About 4,300 homeowners nationally have listed their properties on a World Wide Web site that was launched recently by Abele Owners' Network. Shoppers can search for properties by state, metropolitan area, price, number of bedrooms and type of home - including townhome, condominium or farm/ranch. Homeowners can list their properties on-line. Homeowners can e-mail, fax or mail their information. To obtain listing forms, call (800) 273-7322. The address for the Web site is http://www.owners.com (San Francisco Examiner) Whirlpool, Kenmore dishwashers recalled
Half a million Whirlpool and Kenmore dishwashers are being recalled because wiring in the door latches may overheat and catch fire. Owners should not use the dishwashers until they can be serviced. WLR Foods Inc. plans to close its Wampler-Longacre Inc. poultry processing plant in Charlotte on August 29. ``The Charlotte operation is small and now needs modernizing. Since we do not own the facility, it is more cost effective to move these operations to our modernized, larger facilities,'' said company President James Keeler. The Charlotte plant employs about 100 people. All those employees will be given the opportunity to transfer to open positions at the other North Carolina turkey facilities in Monroe and Marshville. Wampler-Longacre operates 10 other poultry processing plants: three in North Carolina, one in West Virginia, two in Pennsylvania and four in Virginia. The company is based in Broadway, Va. (AP) FDA asked to target Snythroid in drug probe
The government is allowing makers of about 200 drugs to manipulate consumers by arguing - without proof - that they're better than cheaper competitors, a consumer advocacy group contended. Public Citizen filed a petition asking the Food and Drug Administration to investigate the drugs, starting with Synthroid, a widely prescribed thyroid replacement medicine. For the vast majority of drugs sold today, the FDA sets ``bioequivalency standards.'' Any competing drug that meets those standards can be substituted safely as equivalent to the original. But the FDA wasn't required to regulate drugs before 1938, and drugs sold before then never got formal FDA approval - they simply were left on the market. Thus, the FDA never set equivalency standards for their future competitors. Public Citizen targeted Synthroid because of allegations that manufacturer Knoll Pharmaceuticals suppressed a study that found its three cheaper competitors were equivalent. (AP)
